Abstract
Parainfluenza virus, frequently a cause of respiratory disease in children, is uncommonly associated with illness in adults. A study sample of 160 incoming Marine Corps recruits showed that 25% to 48% had no detectable complement-fixing antibody to one or more of the three parainfluenza viruses. The remaining trainees had low levels of preexisting antibody. Five men were hospitalized with parainfluenzarelated pneumonia, including one with a moderate pleural effusion. Keywords
