Abstract
THE respiratory-distress syndrome, or hyalinemembrane disease, is the commonest cause of death among newborn, especially premature, infants, and yet its pathogenesis remains a mystery and its treatment empirical and unsatisfactory. Any physician delivering or caring for newborn infants is confronted with the management of this syndrome, for which a variety of therapeutic regimens have been suggested, and it therefore seems useful to try to define the boundaries of ignorance and knowledge about its treatment.The syndrome can be defined as respiratory distress that develops at or shortly after birth and is not due to any presently known condition such as . . .Keywords
