Abstract
The operation of the Gerdien ion counter is examined. The current-voltage characteristic is derived, and it is shown that the space-charge field of the ions, which is normally neglected, makes a significant contribution to the curve. An experimental test has been made, with negative ions derived from a corona producing currents in the counter up to the order of 10-10 A. Calculated and experimental curves agree well and are consistent with a single mobility for ions of age approximately 1 s.Keywords
