Efficacy of Abbott's Insect Repellent Cream (E4856) in Preventing Schistosoma japonicum Infections in Mice

Abstract
Topical applications of this cream to laboratory mice afforded absolute protection against infection with S. japonicum to a significantly high proportion of animals for at least 12 hours. Mean worm burdens in mice exposed to cercariae after 6, 12 and 24 hours were significantly lighter than those of the controls and represented reductions of 97.8 to 87.9%. Loss of protection after 24 hours was marked; however, in 2 groups of mice exposed after 30 hours worm burdens were reduced 30.8 and 57%.
