The “trueta” Renal Vascular “shunt”

Abstract
Trueta''s concept of a renal vascular "shunt" mediated by the sympathetic nervous system is discussed, and some of the vast literature pertaining to this subject is reviewed briefly. From observations on 40 rabbits, 40 dogs, 4 cats and 4 monkeys it is concluded that under the conditions of the expts., i.e., renal nerve stimulation and subsequent renal ischemia, the juxtame-dullary glomeruli carry the blood flowing through the kidneys at the expense of the cortical glomeruli which became ischemic. This is considered to be a demonstration of a neurovascular control of the distribution of renal blood under the rather extreme and unphysiological conditions of these expts.
