Abstract
A modification of the classical Hopkinson-bar apparatus is used to develop a method for investigating wave propagation in axially impacted cylindrical bars of short length. Strain-gage records were obtained which give the axial strains (as a function of time) induced at the curved surfaces of the cylinders. The axial strains and durations of impact were calculated by using Love’s equation to solve the problem of two bars colliding with equal but opposite velocities. Axial strains were also computed from this equation for bars having step and ramp pressure loading on one end. Finally, comparisons made between experimental and analytical results indicate that Love’s equation can give satisfactory results if the end loading is correctly simulated. Keywords
