M87: an example of a reconfining jet

Abstract
A model is presented to explain the observed positions of the knots in the jet of the radio source M87. It is supposed that the knots represent shocks in a supersonic fluid jet caused by a pressure imbalance between the jet and the surrounding medium. The positions of the knots are determined by the product of the jet's Mach number and radius, and by the variation in the external pressure, which brings about a reconfinement of the jet.
