Papilledema Associated with Blood Loss Anemia

Abstract
A case of a 29-year-old woman is described in which the presenting symptoms were headache, dizziness and fatigue. There was marked papilledema with venous engorgement and punctate hemorrhages in the fundi of both eyes. Her uterus was enlarged and there were bilateral adnexal masses. Her hemoglobin on admission was 4.5G %, hematocrit 15%, erythrocyte count 2.32 million and reticulocytes 5.6%. A spinal tap revealed a pressure of 250mm of water with a protein of 21mg%. An electroencephalogram showed diffuse dysfunction. She was treated with transfusions and then subjected to a total abdominal hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. The pathological report described myomata uteri, chronic cervicitis, ovarian cysts and bilateral salpingitis. There was complete resolution of the papilledema and disappearance of all symptomatology. The electroencephalogram reverted to normal. This case is presented as an instance of papilledema being produced by anemia and cured by the correction of the anemia and removal of the cause of the anemia.
