Lamellar Ichthyosis— Response to Retinoic Acid (Tretinoin)

Abstract
We wish to describe the therapy given to a 12-year-old boy with lamellar ichthyosis. His disease had been refractory to many forms of topical and systemic treatment until the initiation of treatment with tretinoin (all-trans-retinoic acid, vitamin A acid), in alcohol which was applied topically. Irritation produced by tretinoin was overcome by decreasing the frequency of application. Although the mode of action is not understood, the beneficial effect of tretinoin for lamellar ichthyosis appears to be established.
