Sensitivity enhancement effects in the thermoluminescence of LiF TLD-100 at radiation doses below 10 Gy

Abstract
LiF TLD-100 ribbons are frequently used for a wide range of radiobiological dosimetry applications using various sources in the dose range 0.1-10 Gy. It is suggested that an accuracy of 5-6% and a precision of 2-3% is required for the determination of absorbed dose in biological applications. To minimise the random errors, the dosemeters are calibrated individually. The authors examine the systematic errors that may be introduced by this procedure. They have observed, for instance, that the calibration procedure itself enhances the sensitivity of the dosemeters by 1-2% and that this enhancement is dependent upon their thermal history. They describe the procedures that have been established at the Gray Laboratory for routine precision thermoluminescence dosimetry. Particular attention is given to the sensitivity correction factor that is necessary to allow for enhancement effects due to supralinearity and the dosemeter thermal history.
