Abstract
Long‐term choline alfoscerate (αGFC) treatment counteracts age‐dependent structural changes in the hippocampus of Sprague‐Dawley rats. Animals treated with a daily dose of 100 mg/kg αGFC from 18 to 24 months of age had more cells in the CA‐1 to CA‐3 fields and in the dentate gyrus compared to age‐matched cohorts. The density of silver‐gold stained fibers within the stratum oriens of the CA‐1 to CA‐2 fields was greater in rats treated with αGFC than in age‐matched controls. The ramifications of these findings are discussed. Keywords
