Abstract
A total of 358 isolates identified as Streptococcus pneumoniae, collected from patients who suffered pulmonary and extrapulmonary infections, were serotyped. Results showed that American serotypes 14, 7, 3, 1, 2, 4 and 8 were the most common, respectively. Their susceptibility testing showed that their minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) fall within the sensitive range of ≤ .02 μg/ml of penicillin. The epidemiological studies showed that the average annual incidence rate was 1.64 cases/1,000 population. Certain trends were apparent for each of the three parameters, including race, sex and age. Since information on the predominant serotypes of S. pneumoniae in the developing countries is lacking, further studies to characterize pneumococci in the Kingdom are recommended. MeSH KEYWORDS: Streptococcus pneumoniae - Saudi Arabia; Streptococcus pneumoniae - prevention and control
