Abstract
For the foreign doctor meeting his first American patients, the language barrier is a very real one and one for which he ordinarily has not been prepared at all. His training in English, either in his native country or in the United States, has probably taught him to read professional literature, to understand examination questions, and to converse intelligently with his colleagues. But the specialized vocabulary presented in texts designed to teach English medical terminology to the foreigner seldom goes beyond this technical level.
