Abstract
The smectic-A–hexatic-B transition temperatures of the interior layers in free-standing liquid-crystal films are measured as a function of film thickness. Because of the competition between the finite-size and surface-ordering effects, a unique thickness dependence of the transition temperature is observed. Keywords
