Abstract
Case studies from a 6-month, ethnographic study of judicial decisionmaking on guardianship for elderly persons were used to describe four decisionmaking roles: family, attorneys, physicians, and judges. Focused upon are the two issues of conflicting roles of the guardian ad litem, and the interface between legal and medical standards of competency. Found was that societal attitudes and beliefs about aging have great impact on the guardianship decisionmaking process.
