Abstract

Two methods of determining merchantable cubic foot volume have been developed and described. Each method is based on regression functions which describe the distribution of volume over the tree stem and can be applied to an estimate of total volume to compute merchantable volume to specified limits. These functions permit the user to:a) estimate the volume of any portion of the tree stem defined by two measures of merchantable height;b) determine merchantable volume to any specified top diameter and stump height.Additional work is now in progress.
