Abstract
The importance of relativistic effects in the calculation of static dipole polarisabilities of atoms has been investigated using the approximation of Pople and Schofield. Comparison is made with previous studies. It is shown that the method can also be used to provide polarisation potentials for studies on electron and positron scattering by heavy atoms. Keywords
