MILK CONSUMPTION AND THE GROWTH OF SCHOOL CHILDREN: SECOND PRELIMINARY REPORT ON TESTS TO THE SCOTTISH BOARD OF HEALTH

Abstract
This is a 2nd report on tests to determine the effect of the addition of definite quantities of milk to the home diet of children of school age living under ordinary working-class conditions in industrial centers. Four groups received the following supplementary foods: whole milk, either pasteurized or certified; separated milk, machine skimmed; biscuit with the same caloric value as the separated milk; and nothing. As a result of either of the milk additions there was an greater increase in height (23.5%) and in weight (45.37%). The value of separated milk was nearly the same as that of whole milk.
