Abstract
Salinity-induced increase in alanine concentration of gill tissue of Mya arenaria and Spisula solidissima is correlated with increased alanine aminotransferase activity during the first day of osmotic stress due to salinity increase. Both responses are lacking in Mercenaria mercenaria. Metabolic pathways for alanine accumulation appear similar to those described for invertebrate facultative anaerobiosis. Keywords
