STUDIES ON THE METABOLISM OF RADIOPROGESTERONE IN MICE AND RATS*

Abstract
Metabolic studies related to the endocrinology of progesterone in mice and rats were made with a labeled hormone. The hormone was not stored but rapidly metabolized and excreted. The methyl group in the side chain of progesterone-21-614 was shown to be oxidatively excreted as C14O2 in small amt. However, most of the radioactivity was found in the neutral unsaponifiable fraction of the feces. The distr. of radioactivity in the tissues was found, in some cases, to vary significantly with changes in the estrous and pregnancy states of the animal. The pituitary and adrenals of mice invariably contained relatively large concns. of the injected radiocarbon. The highest concn. was observed in the pituitary of rats. The adrenals of rats contained no detectable radiocarbon.
