The Application of a Water Quality Index to River Management

Abstract
River water quality in the United Kingdom is categorised within a five class system developed in 1978 (NWC). This system suffers from problems of subjectivity, reproducibility and sensitivity which limit its value in identifying benefits of management practice. It was expected, in North West Water Authority (NWWA), that use of the Water Quality Index (WQI) developed by House (1986) would meet information requirements for the management of river water quality. Application of the WQI to data, drawn from a selection of river reaches typifying a range of river qualities, has shown that the Index fulfils many of the requirements of operational managers and adds to the overall information derived.
