AN extensive literature pertaining to studies of the thyroid gland has accumulated since the last Medical Progress report1 on this subject. The widespread experimental and clinical use of radioactive iodide (I131) and other isotopically labeled thyroid-hormone components, the growing experience with pharmacologic modifiers of thyroid activity, the continuing development and application of sensitive and accurate chemical, Chromatographic and electrophoretic methods of analysis and the availability of an increasing number of active thyroid-hormone analogues have combined to yield significant advances in knowledge of normal and abnormal thyroid function.
