Observations on the natural history of the thick-spined rat, Hoplomys gymnurus, in Nicaragua

Abstract
Examples of the little-known thick-spined or armored rat, H. gymnurus, were obtained in northeastern Nicaragua (an extension of the previously known range) and observations on its natural history and behavior were recorded in the field. This rodent was found to inhabit burrows in the steep, sandy bank of a small creek; burrows were excavated and are described. Morphological specializations of the limbs, tail, and skin are discussed, and comparisons of the behavior of Hoplomys and the similar echimyid Proechimys semispinosus (which inhabits the same area) are made.
