Abstract
Participant observation and interview data from diet groups reveal some latent and unintended consequences in a voluntary, self-help facility. Group dieting offers five basic social services: (1) the encouragement to let off steam; (2) a friendly social occasion to express sociability for its own sake as a means to face tensions; (3) an outlet to express specific fears and worries; (4) a consumer's guide for the giving and receiving of practical knowledge; and (5) support and suggestions for constructing helpful solutions to emotional problems.
