Abstract
Hylobates pileatus is sympatric with H. lar in a small area of southeastern Thailand. J. E. Gray in his original description correctly characterized H. pileatus as to sexual dichromatism and patterned coloration. Such traits are valid criteria of species in the genus Eylobates, to which we add distinctive vocalizations and different shape of crown. Therefore, H. pileatus should be restored to the status of full species rather than be regarded a subspecies of H. lar. The presence of H. concolor in Thailand is unsubstantiated. Vocalizations of the above three species are compared with those of H. syndactylus, H. agilis, and H. klossi. Keywords
