Abstract
Endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) was performed for the treatment of 8 early stage esophageal cancers. All of the resected specimens were available for histological examinations, and were found out that no cancer cells remained at any margin. As for depth of invasion, five lesions were limited to the epithelium and three to the muscularis mucosae. Large ulcers by endoscopic mucosal resection disappeared without any stenotic change within four weeks. No signs of recurrence were observed during the follow up period (mean = 9.3 months). We found no severe postprocedural complications except one with a perforation which demanded surgical repair. Thus, EMR is a useful technique for the treatment of early-stage esophageal cancer.
