Abstract
A modification of the empirical melting law of Kraut and Kennedy (1966) is proposed. It is shown that the empirical constants in their equations can be calculated from simple thermodynamic considerations. If ΔT m P and ΔV/V0)P are the change in melting temperature and the room-temperature compression respectively at a pressure P then the proposed law is: where T m 0, ΔV fΔHf, Ω and × are the melting temperatures at ordinary pressure, volume change on fusion, latent heat of fusion, atomic volume and isothermal compressibility respectively. Keywords
