Abstract
Continuous turbidimetric monitoring of low and high inocula of Escherichia coli exposed to representatives of each of the major groups of antibiotics has revealed differences of response at antibiotic levels below the conventionally determined minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). Results obtained by this method suggest a number of different mechanisms by which the MIC value of antibiotics, as well as inoculum related effects, are determined.
