Abstract
Amounts of the enzyme ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase were estimated in seedling leaves of barley (Hordewn vulgare L.) and flag leaves of wheat (Triticum aestitum L.) by radial immuno diffusion. A fourfold variation among barley varieties for amount of RuBPCase at the seedling stage was observed (c. 3.5–15mg g−1 fr. wt). Range in variation for amount of flag leaf RuBPCase among wheat varieties was 6-09-9.39 mg RuBPCase g−1 fr. wt. F1 hybrids from interspecific and intergeneric crosses of crested wheatgrasses (Agropyron and Elymus spp.) and their amphidiploid analogues were compared for amount of RuBPCase in the most recent fully expanded leaves harvested before seed set. Amount of enzyme varied from 3.4 to 77.6 mg g−1 fr. wt among the hybrids. No effect chromosome number on enzyme concentration was observed among 13 hybrids and their amphidiploid counterparts.
