ROUTINE TOMOGRAPHY IN GALLBLADDER NONVISUALIZATION

Abstract
In 103 patients with nonvisualization of the gallbladder by conventional studies, a positive diagnosis of biliary tract disease was made in 75 when tomography was added. In 62 out of 75 the actual diagnosis was cystic duct obstruction. In the remaining 28 patients, at least ⅓ had causes other than the gallbladder as the reason for nonvisualization.Without tomography, approximately ½ of the patients would have been diagnosed as having presumed gallbladder disease. The need for intravenous cholangiography as a further diagnostic study has been significantly reduced.
