ON THE CONDITIONS NECESSARY FOR THE CONTINUOUS GROWTH OF HYPOPHYSECTOMIZED ANIMALS*

Abstract
Fourteen hypophysectomized rats showed continuous rapid growth when receiving injections of aqueous alkaline extract of beef anterior lobe. In 17 animals rapid growth declined and ceased after 20-60 days of injection of a more purified extract, but was resumed upon secondary injection of the aqueous alkaline extract. Occasional failure of the latter extract was overcome by intraperitoneal injection of glucose.
