Abstract
A domain model is proposed for nepheline to explain the weak, paired, non-Bragg reflexions. Within the domains the nepheline structure is described in terms of a supercell, consisting of three subcells and stacked in AAA … sequence along c. The domains themselves are in regular sequence corresponding to ABCA … ACBA … stacking along the c axis. The two alternative arrangements occur in small, twinned regions. The domain boundaries are not planar but fluctuate with quite large amplitude about a well-defined mean position. By comparison with other systems and from transformation behaviour, the formation of a supercell and the domain texture are explained in terms of ordering of such atoms as O(1) between three equivalent positions in the average subcell. Keywords
