Abstract
The effects of dietary α-tocopherol on the growth, the phenotype, and the reproduction of the rotifer Asplanchna sieboldi are reviewed. New data show that postmitotic, newborn rotifers of this species cultured with emulsified 5 x 10 −7 M d-α-tocopherol attain significantly larger adult body sizes than control rotifers cultured without this compound. The cytoplasmic enlargement in this large syncytial organism cannot be induced by either 2, 5, 7, 8-tetramethyl-2-(4’,8’-dimethylnonyl)-6-hydroxychromane or ethoxyquin. A specific, tocopherol-stimulated growth response apparently has not been reported in other systems. Data on the effect of α-tocopherol on the growth of another rotifer, Brachionus calyciflorus, are given. Keywords
