Abstract
The influence of the gravity effect on the dynamic behavior of a single-degree inelastic system is studied. The gravity effect, which is associated with the weight of the structure, is found to have increased the system's elastic natural period and changed its dynamic behavior. Limiting conditions, which are based on the free vibration behavior of the system, are proposed to be used as a supplement in design. The forced response of the system due to earthquake type acceleration is studied. The result shows good agreement with the proposed limiting conditions. Displacement spectra and input energy spectra for the inelastic system, with gravity effect considered, are also given. Keywords
