Arthritis in hemochromatosis

Abstract
Hemochromatosis is a disorder characterized by deposition of excess amounts of Fe in the parenchymal cells of many organs. The disease may be idiopathic, but more frequently arises secondary to excessive absorption or intake of Fe. A specific form of arthritis is not recognized to occur in some patients with hemochromatosis and the arthritic symptoms can exist without other clinical manifestations of the disease, as was illustrated in a patient case history. The arthritis of hemochromatosis is usually chronic, with acute exacerbations and is associated with chondrocalcinosis and pseudogout. The treatment of arthropathy associated with hemochromatosis follows the same principles as therapy of arthritis not associated with the disease.
