Abstract
Severe hypothermia was induced in White Leghorn cocks and hens by suspending the birds in water ranging in temp. from 6 to 11.7[degree]C. The lethal body-temps. of 8 hens treated were 233, 23.3, 23.9, 22.8, 23.3, 23.6, 22.8 and 23.0[degree]C, and their periods of survival were 50, 50, 65, 83, 65, 90, 90, and 79 mins., respectively. There was little difference in the lethal temps. of the hens, but the periods of survival were, in most hens, directly proportional to the temp. of the water. The lethal temps. of the 4 [male][male], 19.4, 22.2, 21.1 and 20.0[degree]C, were in every case lower than those for the hens. The periods of survival of the [male][male] were 65, 75, 77 and 90 mins., respectively. Moderate hypothermia was induced in 5 hens by placing them in water at temps. ranging from 20-27.8[degree]C. Body temp. ranged from 27.8[degree]C-31.1[degree]C most of the time. The lethal body-temps. for the hens thus treated were 27.8, 294, 27.8, 28.9 and 28.9[degree]C, and their survival periods were 44, 42, 40.25, 36.5 and 35 hrs., respectively.
