Abstract
Experimental Stark profiles are presented for the helium II 304 AA resonance line, and for two members of the He II Balmer series in a plasma in which conditions of density and temperature, including spatial variations throughout the plasma, are accurately known from Thomson scattering measurements. The profiles were observed from a spatial region of the plasma limited by use of optical aperturing techniques and known to be entirely homogeneous from the Thomson scattering measurements; the ionisation balance in the plasma was separately measured spectroscopically.
