SIX YEARS have now elapsed since Crafoord1in Sweden and Gross2in this country independently did the first successful operations to remove the strictured segment in coarctation of the aorta. The ingenuity and pioneering of these two men deserve much credit, for prior to their work coarctation of the aorta was looked on only as an interesting entity for which little could be done in the way of treatment. Since the hypertension produced by the coarctation is due to a mechanical obstruction, it falls into that small group of hypertensive conditions for which surgery may offer a cure. Therefore, by removal of the obstruction and reestablishment of the vascular channel many patients may be given the opportunity of a longer and healthier life.
