Abstract
The incommensurate phase of Rb2ZnCl4, one of the A2BX4 family crystals which exhibits incommensurate phase transitions before becoming ferroelectric or ferroelastic, is found to be optically active, i.e., g 23 = 3.2 × 10−6 at 1°C. The temperature dependence of g 23 indicates that the nature of the optical activity of Rb2ZnCl4 is classified in the same group as that of [N(CH3)4]2ZnCl4. However, the maximum value of g 23 of this crystal is approximately one order of magnitude larger than that of [N(CH3)4]2ZnCl4. This phenomenon is discussed briefly. Keywords
