Abstract
The clinical usefulness of anabolic agents—testosterone and the newer synthetic steroids—has not been clearly defined. After re-examining their position regarding the status of these drugs, the authors conclude that these agents are useful when specific clinical indications exist. Effective use of these compounds depends upon a knowledge of the anabolic effects desired, of the recommended dosage schedule of the drug selected, and of the side effects and contraindications. In the majority of cases, when a clinically effective anabolic agent is needed, the synthetic steroids available at present do not appear to offer any pronounced advantages over the proper use of testosterone. Keywords
