Abstract
An inexpensive spring powered syringe has been constructed that can mix two solutions in a 20 mm spectrophotometer cell in less than 30 msec. The kinetics of the reactions are followed on an oscilloscope, in conjunction with a Beckman DU optical system. The absorption-time data are collected on an oscillogram with an attached Polaroid camera. A thermostatically controlled sample compartment and special cooling coils allow reactions to be studied as a function of temperature. The apparatus can be used to study oxidation-reduction reactions involving strong oxidizing and reducing agents, complex ion formation reactions, various disproportionation reactions, and many other rapid reactions in solution. Keywords
