Abstract
The effect of superimposing a time‐oscillating helical mode on a static straight theta pinch is investigated. The stability obtained for the mode can be used to support the toroidal force which is introduced ad hoc. Conditions for obtaining toroidal equilibrium by this technique are obtained. The theory is within the framework of ideal magnetohydrodynamics.
