Naevus of the Optic Nerve

Abstract
A single autopsy case is reported of a fair-skinned, hazel-eyed Caucasian female who had had visual complaints and who, at autopsy, was found to have two separate melanocytic lesions involving the retrolaminar portion of the optic nerve and the superior wall of the scleral canal. The optic nerve lesion had not been seen ophthal-moscopically and a routine, post mortem gross examination of the eye did not reveal pigmentation of the nerve head. The pigmented lesions consisted of loosely-arrayed, fusiform, branching, and dendritic melanocytes. These lesions had the cytological appearances of a blue naevus. Naevi of the optic nerve form a spectrum, somewhat analogous to that recognized in the uveal tract.
