Abstract
Just as the union republics have moved to independence, regional units within the Russian republic have called for increased status within the administrative hierarchy and greater sovereignty. The words soviet and socialist have been dropped from their names. The distinction between autonomous republic and autonomous oblast has been erased. Autonomous okrugs are requesting greater recognition. Tatarstan and Chechenia have claimed total independence. Entirely new ethnic units have been suggested. Non-ethnic large regional entities for the Urals, Siberia, and the Far East are seeking greater regional power as well. (Translated from the French by Chauncy D.
