Abstract
Loss of vitamin C from the adrenal gland of rabbits is accompanied by a corresponding loss of total glutathione. Restoration of the vitamin causes an increase of both substances in the gland. Since, in vitro, glutathione and other thiol compounds impede the autoxidation of vitamin C it is concluded that the function of glutathione in the gland is to retard autoxidation of the vitamin C. An equimolar mixture of glutathione and vitamin C showed practically no autoxidation at pH 7.38 although either substance separately absorbed oxygen readily. This publication has 1 reference indexed in Scilit:
