Some Considerations Relating to Property Rights in Man

Abstract
The existence of property rights affects the allocation and distribution of economic resources. While property rights are frequently subject to various constraints imposed by law or custom, within these bounds owners are free to use their resources to achieve their desired ends. Slave codes to regulate treatment by masters were widespread, and there were more legal constraints on the behavior of owners of slaves than on other forms of property. The peculiarity of property rights in man is reflected in the analytical comparison of free labor with slave labor, not the usual comparison of owned and unowned resources. The allocation of property rights in man will obviously affect the level of output and distribution of income within an economy. It is clear, also, that the allocation of property rights in man could effect the measured level of output in the economy.
