Abstract
An electron gas in a magnetic field can undergo a phase transition to a domain state. As the sample thickness decreases, the domain state can cross over into a modulated, or vortex, state. The properties of domains in very thin films are dominated by electrical charging effects. A microscopic picture of domain-wall states is presented.Keywords
