Effects of Size on Vervet (Cercopithecus aethiops) Gait Parameters: A Preliminary Analysis

Abstract
A comparison of the values of certain temporal and spatial locomotor parameters was made among 4 differently aged (sized) female vervet monkeys locomoting at identical speeds. The results show that size has a strong influence on most gait parameters, but the magnitude of this effect differs among the parameters and at different speeds. For example, hindlimb stance duration is strongly affected by body size while swing duration is not. Furthermore, body size seems to have less influence on temporal gait parameters at very slow or fast speeds, than at mid-range ones. Thus, smaller animals must apparently vary gaits and gait parameters in a complicated manner to match speeds used by larger animals.
