Abstract
In a previous publication a variational upper bound on the reaction rate was presented for the irreversible surface reaction A→B within a catalyst in which relevant pore dimensions were small compared to the mean free path of the gas molecules. The bounds were evaluated for two pore models, a cylinder, and a bed of randomly overlapping solid spheres. In this paper the bound for the bed of spheres is improved by introducing into the trial function a term that varies with the local structure of the catalyst pore wall surface.
