Abstract
Our emphasis has not been on citing detailed evidence that shows the weakness of Beloussov's position because we believe that such evidence is both ample and familiar. Rather we draw attention to what we see as his philosophical attitude and historical perspective. Beloussov's position, we conclude, derives from those of the German masters of contractional tectonics. Long before the advent of plate tectonics the inadequacies of this approach had been recognized and its place taken by hypotheses involving large‐scale continental displacements in the writing of such tectonicians as Suess, Argand, and duToit. Keywords
